The referendum for freedom of movement will not be launched. The struggle continues

Over 26,000 signatures have been pledged by over 600 people and collectives in just two weeks – a strong, impressive number.

Nevertheless, we have decided to use our strength in the struggle for freedom of movement and freedom of residence differently and not to launch the referendum.

It was not an easy decision. We were extremely happy and encouraged by the strong support from the grassroots. At the same time, the support we have received from organizations, as well as our own resources in the referendum committee, are currently not enough for an effective, sustainable and combative referendum.

The reason for this is also the political situation: in parliament, the SP has so far spoken out in favor of Switzerland’s financial participation in the BMVI fund and thus supports the European death policy. The Greens were only able to bring themselves to abstain. The only vote against came from the SVP, which would prefer to invest the money in sealing off Switzerland’s borders. In view of this power structure, we came to the conclusion:

even if time is pressing, we must take a more sustainable approach.

The struggle continues

Violence, misery and death have become part of everyday life at Europe’s external borders. The fences and walls are getting longer, higher and more massive. People on the move are deprived of their rights, beaten and deported. We no longer want to accept this policy of death. Our struggle will continue even without a referendum.

Demonstration for freedom of movement: To express our anger against the racist and deadly policy of isolation, we will take the streets in Bern on Saturday, March 30 at 14:00.

Let’s organize together and for the long term

Even after the demonstration on March 30, we will remain active as “Freedom of movement for all”. Together we want to resist Europe’s policy of death. We respond to racism, colonialism and the climate crisis with perspectives: Freedom of movement and residence and climate justice for all.
